Remembering Jim Kriewald, Former Conservatory Faculty and University Administrator

Shenandoah Conservatory joins the larger community in mourning the passing of Dr. James “Jim” A. Kriewald, affectionately known as James, Jim, and “Doc.” Jim passed away peacefully on Oct. 31, 2024, in the late afternoon at Inova Fairfax Medical Center, following injuries sustained in a single-car accident in Winchester, Virginia, on Oct. 26, 2024.

Kriewald is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Diedra, the love of his life, as well as his sister, Joan Faherty, and several nieces and nephews. He served Shenandoah University for 38 years in numerous roles, most recently as the vice president of research, planning and institutional effectiveness impacting countless students, faculty, and staff. Jim dedicated his life to uplifting others, helping them become the best versions of themselves, and contributing to the Shenandoah community.

A tireless advocate for scholarship and student life, Jim was also a respected organist, music director, and mentor to students. In honor of his service, the James A. Kriewald Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Scholarship was established in 2008 through the generosity of Shenandoah University’s Nu Psi Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity.
