Shenandoah University Alum Wins ‘Jeopardy!’ Season Finale

Jonathan Hugendubler ’14 knocked off 16-time champion Scott Riccardi on July 25 episode

Shenandoah University alum Jonathan Hugendubler ’14 became the new “Jeopardy!” champion in the Season 41 finale on July 25, halting the game show’s 10th-longest winning streak in the process.

Hugendubler, who earned a Bachelor of Music in Composition from Shenandoah, overtook defending champion Scott Riccardi during Final Jeopardy, finishing with $23,601 after correctly answering “Who is (William Randolph) Hearst” in response to the clue, “According to one obituary, in 1935 he owned 13 magazines, 8 radio stations, 2 movie companies & $56 million in real estate.” Riccardi incorrectly guessed Howard Hughes, losing $5,000 of the $23,600 he’d accumulated in the first two rounds of the day and snapping his 16-game winning streak.

It was a stunning comeback for Hugendubler, who was in the red for part of the first round and had earned just $800 entering Double Jeopardy, well behind Riccardi ($10,800) and $2,200 shy of fellow challenger Charlotte Cooper. He brought himself back into contention during Double Jeopardy, finding — and answering correctly — both Daily Doubles during the round while building his earnings to $14,000 heading into Final Jeopardy.

Hugendubler, who is from Pennsylvania and now lives in Baltimore, is an adjunct professor at Carroll Community College and an adjunct lecturer at McDaniel College. After completing his undergraduate studies at Shenandoah University, he earned a master’s degree and a doctorate from Johns Hopkins University.

Hugendubler will return to “Jeopardy!” when the Season 42 debut airs on Sept. 8.
