Article on Schemas in Tonal Jazz Repertoire by Salley Published by Oxford University Press

The article “On Schemas in Tonal Jazz Repertoire” by Coordinator of Music Theory and Professor of Music Theory Keith Salley, Ph.D., was published in the most recent issue of Oxford University Press’s Music Theory Spectrum. It addresses the schematic nature of jazz pedagogy and the ‘lead sheet’ tradition and explores compositions and reharmonizations from the American Songbook to post-bop jazz. Dr. Salley began looking into this topic in 2017, and has shared his research at various conferences across the United States, including meetings of the Music Theory Society of the Mid-Atlantic and the Society for Music Theory and a residency at University of Colorado Boulder.
