Celebrate The Legacy Of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Shenandoah University invites the community to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, Jan. 19, with a day full of events and activities on main campus that honor Dr. King’s commitment to equality, civil rights and community service.

The annual Service of Remembrance, Shenandoah’s longest-running celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, takes place at 1 p.m. in Goodson Chapel-Recital Hall and honors the civil rights leader through inspirational words, images and music. Additionally, the university community is invited to join Shenandoah’s Center for Civic Engagement in the Brandt Student Center throughout the day to provide service and support to those in need in the Winchester community.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Community Service And Activities Tables

11 a.m.-4 p.m. | Brandt Student Center

Volunteer some time for community service and celebrate the King holiday at tables hosted by the Center for Civic Engagement. Opening remarks begin at 11 a.m.; please note there will be a break from 12:45-2 p.m. to allow everyone to attend the Service of Remembrance.

• Book drive sanitizing: Clean books collected during CCE’s book drive before they’re donated to the Handley Regional Library.
• Makeup kits for the Laurel Center: Pack makeup kits for the women at the Laurel Center, which provides support for survivors of domestic and sexual violence.
• Hygiene packs: Assemble hygiene packs to be donated to the Winchester Area Temporary Transitional Shelter (WATTS) for those experiencing homelessness.
• The Dream Quilt: Write your personal dream for the future on a fabric square to be made into a giant quilt that demonstrates the collective dreams of the SU community.
• Black inventor guessing game: Learn more about Black inventors and their contributions to society. This event is hosted by the CCE Dialogue Team.
• Relay For Life: Write the names of those impacted by cancer on ribbon cutouts to be displayed at the Relay For Life event held at Shenandoah University in March.

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Service of Remembrance

The annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Service of Remembrance opens with a concert by Shenandoah’s Harambee Gospel Choir and will feature words, images and music honoring the life and legacy of Dr. King. The keynote speaker is Dr. Betty Kilby Fisher Baldwin and she will host a Q&A at 4 p.m. in Goodson Chapel-Recital Hall. This event is hosted by the Office of Spiritual Life and the Office of Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity, and is free and open to the public. Rise Against Hunger

2-4 p.m. | Brandt Student Center, Ferrari Room

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Center for Civic Engagement hosts Rise Against Hunger, a global movement to end hunger through sustainable partnerships that empower communities and nourish lives. Participants work collaboratively to package 10,000 meals that will be shipped to places in need. Students, staff, and faculty are invited to enjoy a fun afternoon of packing meals for others.
