Evelyn Maletick ’26 competes internationally in Theatre on Ice as she finishes her Shenandoah studies

As a Shenandoah University Bachelor of Science in nursing student, Evelyn Maletick ’26 would be expected to have a busy schedule during the spring term of her senior year, preparing to take the NCLEX exam and start a career in one of health care’s most vital roles. But Maletick’s schedule includes something more – competitive figure skating.

Maletick, who discovered her love of skating at age 7 while attending a friend’s birthday party, travels to Northern Virginia every weekend to practice as part of Capital Theatre on Ice’s adult team. Maletick joined Capital Theatre on Ice in middle school, only taking two years off between then and now to focus on academics. Theatre on Ice, also known as Ballet on Ice, is a group endeavor in which eight to 28 skaters tell a story together through figure skating, dance and drama. “I really enjoy figure skating as it’s one of the few sports that happens in a cold environment year round and it uniquely combines artistry and athleticism similarly to how dance does,” Maletick said.

Earlier this year, she and the team journeyed to France for their international debut at the Trophee Lydwine de Shiedam, and right now, several of the Capital Theatre on Ice’s teams, including Maletick’s, are in Lansing, Michigan, for Theatre on Ice’s Nation’s Cup and Adult Gold Cup competitions. After that, the group’s teams will compete at nationals in June.

You can see Capital Theatre on Ice’s short program in France in the video below at the 10:30 mark, and its long program at 1:41:08.

Maletick isn’t alone in juggling intense academic tasks with skating. “Another one of my teammates is also currently getting a degree (She’s officially a doctor now!) and we help hold each other accountable with those 11:59 p.m. deadlines,” she said.

Maletick said she’s currently interviewing at Northern Virginia hospitals for a new graduate registered nurse residency. Nursing, she said, gives her the perfect balance between two things she enjoys greatly: science and caring for others. “I also take pride in being able to make a positive impact on people’s lives while they are possibly experiencing some of their worst moments,” she said.

As she begins her career, she anticipates that figure skating will continue to be a part of her life.  “I also plan to continue working with the Adult CTOI team next season and eventually work back up to skating with our senior team, which is a different level team than the adult team,” she said.
