Gender Inclusive Housing (GIH)

Gender inclusive housing is an on-campus housing option that allows students of different sexes, genders, or gender identities to live in the same residence hall room.

At Shenandoah University, we seek to support the needs of all students. To do this, we acknowledge our diverse student population and offer our completely voluntary GIH option which allows students who are transgender, gender fluid, and gender non-conforming to room with one another. To do this, students need only to indicate their interest while filling out their housing application on the housing portal.

Who Can Take Advantage of Gender Inclusive Housing (GIH)?

Any student can indicate their interest in GIH on their housing application and will subsequently be contacted by the Area Coordinator for Assessment, Development, & Inclusion (ADI) about how the Office of Residence Life can best accommodate their roommate preferences. Students who have already discussed being roommates with one another and have indicated their interest in GIH may meet with the Area Coordinator for ADI to discuss what are available housing options. As with all residence hall rooms, students are not permitted to live with someone with whom they are in a romantic relationship. Students interested in GIH without a roommate have the option to work with the Area Coordinator for ADI to find a good roommate pairing for you!

Where is Gender Inclusive Housing at Shenandoah University?

Gender inclusive housing options are available in any of our first-year halls. They are conveniently located close to the Allen Dining Hall and Cooley Hall (where Office of Residence Life is located).

For upper-class students, gender inclusive housing may be requested at any upperclass residence hall as space allows.

If this housing option is something you would like to explore further as you begin to think about housing for your first year at SU, know that we are here to help!

For more information, reach out to the Area Coordinator for ADI Christopher Limjuco via email at climjuco21@su.edu or 540-665-4844.
