Hairston holds a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from SU and an associate’s degree from Patrick Henry Community College.
“My fondest memory of Shenandoah was being crowned 2012-2013 Homecoming Junior Prince and 2013-2014 Homecoming King,” states new alumni board member, Myles Hairston ’14.
During his time as an undergraduate student, Hairston worked in several different departments at the university. “Of all the different areas, the most influential to me was working with Student Life and Residence Life. In these departments, I was given various opportunities to meet the student body and plan and host events, but most of all create an environment to have a positive impact on my fellow classmates.”
Immediately after graduating from Shenandoah, Hairston started working as a summer conference specialist for summer programs at the university while he enrolled in the MBA program at the Harry F. Byrd, Jr. School of Business, where he is currently a graduate assistant. In this position, he assists professors and also takes care of administrative tasks. Hairston also gives short tours of the Business School and answers questions from students.
He is resident director of Racey Hall where he supervises six resident assistants and is responsible for ensuring student safety. “We engage in conversations with the students that set the atmosphere for a healthy and educational living environment for our residents.” Hairston also assists in residential program planning, such as the Parker Haunted House and “Foamapalooza.”
He is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa and Alpha Kappa Psi (Psi Delta) fraternities, and is the Student Government Association Chief of Staff.
Hairston feels that it’s important for him to give back to SU so that he can be a part of improving the education and experience of current and new students. His overall experience as an undergraduate encouraged him to get involved again, this time as an alumni board member. “Now, as a graduate student, I see it as an opportunity to share my knowledge with others in need of direction,” said Hairston.
He has two older brothers, and his parents celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary this year. Hairston enjoys watching television shows by Shonda Rhimes (Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder), cooking, crafting, singing and hanging out with friends.
