Alumnus Promoted Within Nationals Baseball System

Shenandoah Hornet athletes past and present are garnering attention nationally and regionally. Here’s our latest roundup of their accomplishments:

Phil Morse ’16 has been promoted by the Washington Nationals organization to Hagerstown (Md.) of the South Atlantic League. Morse was drafted in the 16th round last summer by the Nats. Baseball player Jake Loew ’17 earned Academic All-America and All-America honors. This made him the 18th Shenandoah University student-athlete, and fifth baseball player, to be named Academic All-America. The school has had at least one student-athlete named Academic All-America in each of the past 11 years. The Shenandoah University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics had 272 student-athletes recognized for academic achievement following the completion of the spring 2017 semester. The 272, representing all 21 intercollegiate programs, earned Athletic Director’s List honors after achieving at least a 3.0 GPA this past spring. Of this group, 141 were named to the Dean’s List (3.5 and above) and 63 to the President’s List for posting at least a 3.9 GPA. Finally, 37 of the President’s List honorees had perfect 4.0 GPAs. Sixteen intercollegiate athletics teams earned at least a 3.0 team GPA in team grades for spring 2017. The women’s tennis team, with a 3.81 team GPA, paced the 16 teams earning the 3.0 standard. Women’s soccer came in at 3.61 and field hockey at 3.41 to round out the top three. Ben Judy ’17 and Stephen LaTona ’17 were named to the USILA/Nike Scholar All-America team in selections announced recently by the organization. They are the first two Shenandoah University men’s lacrosse players to earn Scholar All-America honors. Judy was also first team All-South Region in selections announced by the Intercollegiate Men’s Lacrosse Coaches Association. Colin Morse ’18 headlines five baseball players who have earned Virginia State Sports Information Directors Association All-State honors. Morse, Jake Loew ’17 and Tyler Hott ’17 were named to the first team at starting pitcher, designated hitter, and relief pitcher, respectively, with Dan Cameron ’17 and rising junior Luke Nussman named to the second team. Cameron was selected at catcher and Nussman at first base. The athletics department has also announced that it will continue its audio broadcast agreement with The River 95.3 – WZRV-FM through the end of the 2020 spring seasons. WZRV will provide commercial audio broadcasts of the Hornets’ home and away men’s basketball games for the 26th consecutive year and football games for the 18th consecutive year.
