Students Readying For Work At 2018 South Korean Olympics

Shenandoah University is gearing up to send 34 students to the 2018 Winter Olympic Games being held in PyeongChang, South Korea, in February, as part of a Global Experiential Learning class.

Korean Cultural organization visits Shenandoah and shares Korean foodIn mid-October 2017, South Korean Olympic Bid Committee Consultant and Endowed Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois Dr. Tschangho John Kim, as well as members of the Korean American Cultural Committee and a Korean cookbook author visited Shenandoah to speak about the games and Korean culture and share Korean food. Shenandoah University’s Harry F. Byrd, Jr. School of Business Executive in Residence, Dan Kaseman, of Atoka Properties, organized the event.

The visit to Shenandoah garnered coverage in a South Korean newspaper. The article talks about the GEL trip, in which students, faculty, and staff will get to see the Winter Olympics in a unique way that most people will never get to experience and gain valuable knowledge of a major international sporting event. Lessons such as event planning, event management, cultural understanding, marketing, and more will be taught to the students through class discussions and this intimate first-hand experience. The group will work at the Alpensia Biathlon Center in various roles, according to Byrd School of Business Assistant Dean of Student Affairs Fritz Polite, Ph.D., MPA.
