National Jazz Workshop Events and Performances Welcome Hundreds of Participants to Shenandoah Conservatory

Features big bands, improvisational courses, masterclasses and jam sessions, July 15-20

The National Jazz Workshop (NJW) will hold its tenth week-long camp at Shenandoah Conservatory from Sunday, July 15, through Friday, July 20. The event welcomes approximately 100 high school and adult participants to Winchester, Virginia, where they perform in big bands, and attend music theory and improvisation courses, masterclasses and jam sessions.

All performances are free and open to the public and take place in Armstrong Concert Hall on the main campus of Shenandoah University.

National Jazz Workshop 2018Adjunct Associate Professor of Classical and Jazz Trombone Matt Niess, D.M.A., serves as director of the workshop and Harrison Endowed Chair in Piano; Associate Professor of Jazz Piano and Director of Jazz Studies Robert Larson, D.M.A., serves as the host.

Shenandoah Conservatory is home to more than 700 students enrolled in baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral programs in the areas of music, theatre and dance. Virginia’s oldest and premier center for performing arts training, the conservatory is led by a dynamic faculty composed of performers and scholars of national and international repute.
