Phi Lambda Sigma initiates members

Phi Lambda Sigma (PLS), the pharmacy leadership society, initiated new members on Nov. 5, 2018. The new members are Abigail Hoffman, Alexander Meligakes, Allison Monsell, Bridget Bergquist, Brittany Tyree, Camelia Rubalcava, Clay Rodgers, Corey Bradley, Emily Seward, Jennifer Bingham, Jessica Daunoras, Mackenzie Kincer, Sama Alabbas, Sangida Nafisa, Shawn Kim, Shyreen Kamal and Tania Leon.

Pharmacy students and faculty talk to local elementary students

Emily Yeager ’18, Dr. Ryan Turner (PGY-1 resident, Valley Pharmacy) and Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice Sarah Parnapy-Jawaid, Pharm.D., recently talked about a career as a pharmacist to Garland R. Quarles Elementary School students in Winchester, Virginia.

Students participate in APhA-ASP Patient Counseling Competition

Congratulations to all of the participants in the 2019 American Pharmacists Association-Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) Patient Counseling Competition. The first-place winner will have the opportunity to represent Shenandoah University at the National Patient Counseling Competition in Seattle, Washington, during the APhA Annual Meeting. The following are the results of the competition: Winner: Ashley Williams (P1); 2nd Place: Nikemdilim Ndum (P1); and 3rd Place: Jessica Samoy (P1). Top finalists were, in alphabetical order:  Sidrah Alam, Niya Ayala, Jennifer Bingham, Leanne Crawford, Jessica Dotson, Allison Monsell and Ashley Speier. 

Student presents at midyear meeting

In early November 2018, at the the APhA-ASP Region 2 Midyear Regional Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland, Alex Meligakes ’20 presented and discussed the Shenandoah chapter’s primary policy resolution on the discouragement of pharmacy benefit managers’ (PBM) use of spread pricing models, and a combined resolution, in conjunction with Rutgers University, on the implementation of medical cannabis education into the Pharm.D. curriculum. After consideration by representatives from 18 different schools of pharmacy, both policy resolutions passed the regional stage and have moved forward to be discussed further by the national APhA-ASP resolutions committee.

Gamma Omicron chapter in running for Rho Chi Chapter Achievement Award

Shenandoah University’s Gamma Omicron chapter of Rho Chi has been selected as a finalist for the Chapter Achievement Award. The winning chapter will be announced and recognized at the 2019 Annual Meeting of the Rho Chi Society in Seattle, Washington, tentatively scheduled for Sunday, March 24, 2019 (held in conjunction with the APhA2019 Annual Meeting scheduled for March 22 through March 25).
