Guest Choreographer and Dancer Katie Vickers Presents ‘Survival in Ruins’

Special guest choreographer and dancer Katie Vickers presented “Survival in Ruins” on Thursday, Oct. 3, and Friday, Oct. 4, in Shingleton Dance Space. This unique performance and memoir tells the story of the interconnectedness of life, reflected in the birth of her second child and diagnosis of her father with Alzheimer’s disease. The production featured sound by Grant Cutler and Philip Glass; sound design by Vickers; sound editing by Michael Kiley and Albert Quesada; set design by Margot Becker; lighting design by Albert Quesada; and was supported by Threshold Collective.

Both performances included a community roundtable discussion about dementia, with several professionals from the Winchester area talking about dementia and responding to Vickers’ performance.

This performance was presented by the Shenandoah Conservatory Dance Division and music therapy program as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the music therapy program.
