Shenandoah University College of Arts and Sciences Dean and Interim Dean of the School of Business Jeff Coker, Ph.D. and Shenandoah University School of Business Yount, Hyde & Barbour, P.C. Endowed Chair in Accounting and Professor of Accounting Martin Mulyadi, Ph.D.

Shenandoah University Interim Dean of the School of Business Jeff Coker, Ph.D., and Martin Mulyadi, Ph.D., YHB Endowed Chair in Accounting, have been featured in the Financial Times for their co-authored teaching case study, “The Football Leadership Dilemma.”

Published as part of the Financial Times’ ongoing Business School Teaching Case Series, the piece explores the complex balance between financial prudence and sporting ambition through the example of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club under longtime chair Daniel Levy. The case highlights leadership, governance, and strategic decision-making challenges that resonate far beyond sports, offering lessons applicable to business executives, investors, and students alike.

“This project draws on Dr. Mulyadi’s deep expertise in accounting and finance, and my own focus on leadership and organizational decision-making,” said Dr. Coker. “Together, we wanted to examine how leaders navigate competing imperatives – in this case, profitability versus performance – a dilemma every organization faces in some form.”

The Financial Times series presents real-world business dilemmas for classroom discussion at top business schools around the world. Drs. Mulyadi and Coker’s contribution underscores Shenandoah’s growing global presence in applied business education and its commitment to connecting academic insight with contemporary leadership practice.
