Adjunct Assistant Professor of Music Literature Alanna Tierno, Ph.D., presented her paper, “A Chalice in One Hand and a Machete in the Other: The Roman Catholic Clown Mass and Twenty-First Century Liturgical Music Discourse,” on Feb. 5, at the conference Subverting Sonic Conventions: The Languages and Non-languages of Clowns, which was held in conjunction with the premiere of Ana Sokolović’s new opera “Clown(s)” in Montreal. The conference paper is based on research Tierno is currently doing for her second monograph on Roman Catholic liturgical music since 1990.
