On April 2, eight students from Shenandoah University’s School of Business visited Deloitte for a career exploration and networking experience that introduced them to opportunities in the accounting profession and connected them with professionals at one of the Big Four firms.

The group included students in the accounting concentration from multiple class years, giving participants at different stages of their academic journey the chance to hear from Deloitte speakers, engage with professionals across service lines, and gain a deeper understanding of the many paths available in public accounting.

The visit was part of Deloitte’s Access Accounting program, which invites students to explore the profession through a one-day office experience. During the event, students heard from speakers, participated in interactive and game-based activities, and took part in programming focused on the accounting profession and professional development.

Students also participated in Deloitte’s team challenge, which included question-based activities, a business simulation, and a pitch competition. Working on mixed-university teams, Shenandoah students collaborated with peers from other schools and performed well, with Gisel Ventura-Argueta ’26 serving on the first-place team, Prerana Bajracharya ’26 on the second-place team, and Madeline Belan ’29 on the third-place team.

“This visit reflects the kind of opportunities we want for our students. Experiences like this help students connect with professionals, explore the profession, and build confidence as they prepare for their careers,” said Martin Mulyadi, Ph.D., CGMA, YHB Endowed Chair in Accounting and professor of accounting in Shenandoah University’s School of Business.

Students highlighted the visit as a valuable and engaging learning experience.

“The networking event at Deloitte was a great experience,” said Afsara Chowdhury ’28. “It felt welcoming, inspiring, and gave me a chance to talk with people who were happy to share their journey and advice regarding their career in accounting.”

“My visit to Deloitte was incredibly inspiring,” said Briyit Hernandez ’26. “I gained valuable insight from professionals about the many career opportunities available. It showed me that there is no one ‘perfect’ path into a Big Four firm. The best part was collaborating and building friendships with students from other universities.”

Nick Wagner ’29 stated: “It was great to be able to network with professionals and learn more about the accounting career,” and Angela Lin ’28 said, “It was inspiring to connect with professionals and learn about real world opportunities.”
