Shenandoah Conservatory Jazz Ensemble and Winchester-Frederick County Bar Association Partner to Raise Funds for Legal Aid and Scholarships
First-Ever Jazz4Justice Fundraising Event Slated For April 9 at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema
The Shenandoah Conservatory Jazz Ensemble presents, “Jazz Goes to the Movies,” at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 9, at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema (181 Kernstown Commons Blvd., Winchester). The concert is a Jazz4Justice™ event in partnership with the Winchester-Frederick County Bar Association, and will raise funds to support Blue Ridge Legal Services and the Shenandoah Conservatory Jazz Ensemble Tour of Northwest United States.
“Our students are excited to perform classic movie themes in a theater setting, accompanied by on-screen trailers, posters, and fun information about each film,” said Harrison Endowed Chair in Piano and Associate Professor of Jazz Piano Robert Larson, D.M.A. “The fact that this benefits both our students and Blue Ridge Legal Services makes this even more meaningful.”
About the Performance:
This multi-media event will feature the Shenandoah Conservatory Jazz Ensemble, directed by Adjunct Associate Professor of Jazz and Trumpet Craig Fraedrich, M.M., performing arrangements including “Anatomy of a Murder” (1959) by Duke Ellington, “Catch Me If You Can” (1962) by John Williams, “The Wizard of Oz (Over the Rainbow)” (1939) by Harold Arlen, “Goldfinger” (1964) by John Barry and more. Arrangements are by Mike Tomaro, Alan Baylock ’90 and Fraedrich. The concert will also include some swinging Count Basie classics.
The event concludes with a jam session, hosted by Shenandoah’s jazz students, at the Greene Turtle restaurant (185 Kernstown Commons Blvd., Winchester).

In 2000, Fairfax attorney Ed Weiner attended a student jazz recital. He was impressed by the music, but distressed by the small audience. As the President of the Fairfax Law Foundation, he saw an opportunity for a new partnership – universities would provide the musical talent and the local Bar Association would provide the audience and sponsors.
