MCWI Director Delivers Keynote for Commemoration & Directs Historical Tour

C-SPAN Broadcasts Noyalas' Speech

On Saturday, July 13, McCormick Civil War Institute (MCWI) Director Jonathan Noyalas ’01, M.A., had the honor of delivering the keynote address for the National Park Service’s 155th anniversary commemoration of the Battle of Fort Stevens. The event attracted nearly 600 individuals and also featured remarks by  U.S. Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton. Noyalas’ remarks can be viewed on C-SPAN.

In June, Noyalas chaired a panel, “Writing Harpers Ferry” for the 75th anniversary of the establishment of Harpers Ferry National Historical Park.

Additionally, MCWI participated in Winchester’s Civil War weekend for the third consecutive year. On Saturday, Aug. 17, Noyalas led a special walking tour in the downtown historic district focusing on Winchester’s experience in the spring and summer of 1864. The tour attracted nearly 100 individuals and focused on such topics as the 19th United States Colored Troops’ recruitment efforts in the city and the experiences of civilians during the Third Battle of Winchester.
