Esports Championships Set for Dec. 18 at Shenandoah

High school students from across the state to converge for a day of competition

On Saturday, Dec. 18, Shenandoah University will be awash in esports as the host site for the Virginia High School League esports championships.

Teams from 20 schools (for a total of approximately 80 students) will participate in competitions located at the university’s Esports Arena in the Armory Building and Halpin-Harrison Hall from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. (Some teams will take part remotely.)

Students in the ESPT 360 Esports Event Management class and others involved with the SU esports program have worked on preparing for the event for several months, said Director and Associate Professor of Esports Joey Gawrysiak, Ph.D. “This includes meeting with the sponsor Gamblers Bet and companies running the event (VHSL and PlayVS), organizing the volunteer list, creating assets for production and streaming, training volunteers and working run-throughs. We have had weekly meetings with PlayVS and VHSL to make sure that we are all on the same page about the run of show, rule sets, and the production assets.”

Other organizations participating in the event are Chick-fil-A, the U.S. Army, and the Washington Spirit.

You can watch the competition on the PlayVS twitch channel at https://www.twitch.tv/playvs.
