Stained Glass at Chapel

Welcome to Spiritual Life

The Office of Spiritual Life is dedicated to unleashing students’ spirit and potential by giving them a variety of settings in which to explore their faiths, questions, gifts, hopes and dreams as they prepare to be leaders in their faith communities and around the world.

The Office of Spiritual Life is committed to developing student leaders that are seeking authenticity, inclusion, and a call to justice.

What We Offer

Religious Diversity Resources

Shenandoah University is committed to fostering a diverse community supported by an equitable, inclusive, campus climate. Our commitment applies to all university staff, faculty and students. Providing an equal opportunity for each individual to observe religious obligations strengthens our community as a whole. Please reach out to spirituallife@su.edu so we can talk with you about how you can study, live, and thrive at Shenandoah while observing your religious obligations.

What is a Chaplain

Chaplains are professional caregivers who specialize in addressing the religious and spiritual needs of others, including the needs of those with diverse faith traditions and those without a faith tradition. Chaplains specialize in spiritual care and can help you explore a wide range of issues, from individual concerns (such as self-acceptance, belonging, or calling) to more universal concerns (such as the nature of God, the meaning of life, or the reason for loss and grief). Chaplains can also provide confidential pastoral and spiritual care and can connect you to other religious and spiritual resources. Whether you want to dive into the big stuff—like ethics and spirituality—or you just need to vent about your day, our chaplains are here to listen. No topic is too big or too small. Reach out anytime to chat about whatever’s on your mind!

Our office will be known for:
  • A culture of seeking: Students will engage in critical thought and analysis about faith, vocational discernment, and identity.
  • A culture of authenticity: Students will learn to appreciate and know their own traditions, as well as others, including the United Methodist affiliation of SU.
  • A culture of inclusion: Students will celebrate diversity and engage a multicultural worldview, recognizing, respecting, and appreciating differences of identities, ideologies, philosophies, religions, and experiences.
  • A culture of justice: Students will embody an ethic of service and a call to justice, working to be the change needed in the world.
