Dear Friends,
The school year is winding down and summer is just around the corner. These past few months of school have been challenging for everyone – teachers, students and parents. Being quarantined added unique challenges. Here in Winchester and throughout much of Virginia, we have entered Phase II. Stores are opening, and shortages of goods seem to have eased. We were able to see our newest grandchild and hold him for only the second time since his birth in March.
On a positive note, I hope you were able to watch SU’s virtual commencement on May 16, 2020. It was a wonderful celebration honoring the graduates and recognizing their achievements. I was very honored to take part and welcome the newest members into our alumni association! An in-person commencement and celebration are planned for Homecoming Weekend, circumstances permitting.
Our nation is reeling from the events of the past few weeks. We remain shocked and saddened by the acts of senseless violence and racism. Here in Winchester, we have had three protest marches – all have been powerful and peaceful.
SU President Tracy Fitzsimmons has written a powerful response addressing intolerance for acts of racism. New campus initiatives addressing race have been introduced to faculty, staff, students, alumni, the board of trustees and the community. An email was sent to you this past week with more detailed information about the initiatives; the information can be accessed here. In addition, a forum to discuss issues surrounding the name of SU’s Harry F. Byrd, Jr. School of Business is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 10. All Shenandoah University alumni are invited to join in on the discussion via this Zoom link: https://su.zoom.us/j/93781828049. If you haven’t already done so, please take the time to read all of this information. If you have concerns, suggestions and/or comments, please reach out to alums@su.edu.
I hope that wherever you live, you and your family are healthy and safe. Please let us hear from you soon and let us know how you are doing.
Best,
Susan Helsley
President, SU Alumni Association
